Glimpses of Mumbai Underworld.

Officer of Mumbai's Encounter Squad, Pradeep Sharma.

Starting from the 40's Moral Gangsters to the Ruthless Gangsters of the '80s, Mumbai saw a huge in the ending of the Century. The Era itself is divided into two i) 1940-1980 ii) 1980-present. The trio of Haji Mastan, Karim Lala, V mudailiar was mostly on the smuggling of contraband and their community works which made them a sort of hero in their parts. Karim Lala was the first of the three, a Pathan himself he mostly made the Pathans work for him and used to engage in extortion, betting, and other crimes. Haji Mastan was a Tamilian born, arrived in Mumbai at the age of 8, and then afterward started working with Karim Lala. But Haji mastan was one of the respected and a person with dignity. He was mostly involved in smuggling goods and other substances and also kept away from drug trades. He was the first one to involve in Bollywood producing and used to sit with many top-brass of industry. V Mudailiar or Vardha was mostly involved in areas of Dharavi and used to involve in contract killings and drug trade.

Then came one of the most notorious gangsters in the history of Underworld, Dawood Ibrahim and D-company. The D-company is not a proper criminal syndicate like the other Cartels but it is like a group of organizations ranging from terror to Pakistan's ISI working together with Dawood Ibrahim as their leader.

The story revolves around some of the life instances of Abu Salem and connects its dots with the Whole Mumbai. Salem, along with his three brothers and parents used to live in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. His father was a Renowned lawyer and in a later period died due to a bike accident. Salem's family then lived in poverty as the lone bread earner died. He had an interest in mechanic work and worked for a while then he moved to Delhi and then to Mumbai to work in a cousin's shop in Jogeshwari. That time the shops were selling something and earning something. There used to be a back-trade in the names of the leather goods shops. He was ambitious and there he came in contact with Anis Ibrahim( Dawood's brother). He worked and carried many errands, his name has now reached in Dawood's ears.

The several instances in Abu Salem's meeting with Hussain Zaidi spoke that he was well-mannered and a handsome young man and a great Human being. But his young-brain and tactics had revolutionized the Mumbai Underworld. That time India had no extradition treaty with UAE, and the travel was cheap too with just around 5,000 with visa on arrival. It was Dawood who was the first to move outside India and settle there. Dubai was just the city filled with Indians, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and as all the three share the same complexion they were never caught by the authorities.

Mumbai Underworld was starting to go towards its peak and the authorities were started to know it. After some period of the killing of Sabir(Dawood's Brother) by the Pathan Brothers all were alert and the air was on the verge of a deadly gang war. Afterwhile, Dawood flew to Dubai some say that it was Mumbai Police who helped him get out as he was the son of Ibrahim Kaskar, Constable in the CID division of Mumbai police. Before leaving Mumbai, Dawood and His Brother (Anis) appointed 7 persons their territory to operate. Sayyed topi was one of them, he operated in the suburbian area of around Andheri to Borivali.

When in the first years in Dubai with Anis he has been establishing great empires in many other nations. He had friends and workers in Africa too, which is another underworld capital for Indians. That time Chhota Rajan and Chhota Shakeel were his closest aids. They both were too called to Dubai, while Rajan got a year earlier than Shakeel he had made a great bonding with them. It was one of the reasons for the in-party rivalry between them.

The Bjp-led Babri masjid demolition and the communal tension between two religions were much into its prominence in Mumbai. Dawood was also keen to act and his people also wanted him to. One woman from his community sent him a box of broken bangles; this is the biggest shameful thing to a man. Also then ISI-Pakistan's intelligence agency was also in his peak missions. They contacted many Arab Businessmen and Dawood was also one of them. The Mission was called Tehreek-e-intekam and it was orchestrated with the help of many. Dawood, Anis, Mohammad Dossa, Tiger Memon, Tahir Merchant all together carried the 1993 Bomb blasts. But due to the religious conflict, Chhota Rajan was once disappointed due to the nature of the act.

Abu Saleem at starting was not aware of his connection to the Blasts but then he connected the dots where he had delivered ammunition packages and some explosives at Sanjay Dutt's house. Though Dutt due to his political influence and lack of evidence was out of jail by mild term and without the inclusion of the TADA act. Also, the people involved in the supplying of Ak-56 to Sanjay Dutt were arrested, Abu Salem though of Fleeing India to Dubai. He had gone to his native, made fake passports of him as Akil Ahmed Azmi and his wife Sameera who was a college-going girl of 17 years when he married her, as Sabina Azmi. He flew to Dubai and his wife stayed for a while in India.

Following pressure from Indian Authorities to Extraditate Dawood Ibrahim from UAE, with the help of ISI-he flew to Karachi and still stays there. India also had applied for the Extradition of Abu Salem and others but as He flew in the name of Akil Ahmed Azmi the Arab Beaucracy was no keen to move further in finding him. Salem had great use of the brain in his works when his top-henchmen were killed by police encounters (one was a suspended ex-policemen who for money came into the contact and rose to top position). After the killing spree of the henchmen he made the first one to use the single-use men from his native. He used to appoint the uneducated and unemployed youth who were on the verge of doing anything for money. He even paid for a return ticket too, so it was kind of easy for them and cost-effective for Abu Salem. Morning, they used to arrive by train they got their single-bore weapon-they killed and they left in Evening's Gorakhpur express. This made the extortion money into a huge flow for the D-company.

Abu Saleem was later caught in Portugal and is now spending his time in Mumbai's Arthur Road. Due to his extradition treaty from Portugal he made himself safe from the Death penalty which his colleagues like Dossa and Memon got. His wife is now Settled in the United States with a 21-year-old boy and owns a shopping mall and few petrol stations. Later Abu Saleem married Monica Bedi and also was preparing to marry a 21-year old girl which he met in court. He was known for his attraction towards females and his relationship with many Bollywood actresses. Many even called him a sexual predator and was many times a reason for abuse from his boss.

Dawood stayed in Karachi though sometimes he also wished to come back to India but there was a sense of mistrust as he couldn't trust Indian authorities and India couldn't trust him. His brother Anis Ibrahim was killed in the streets of Karachi on in around 2009, it was said that he was planning to come back to India and the ISI came into his acts. Dawood was always against the involvement of family on the game of trade in the underworld, there have been many instances where his family was involved by his opponents. When Chhota Shakeel in after days moved out of the D-company he started attacking Dawood's business. When Iqbal Kaskar's son Rizwan was arrested on the crime of extortion and threats, Dawood personally contacted Fahim Machmach who is a close aid of Chhota Shakeel and abused him for his acts of involving the new generation of his family into it.

He is of around 65 years of age and now wants a successor to his Syndicate but he as always was fond of loyalists, but one cannot get them nowadays and as the new-generation of the crime network is mostly of the dynast one and there are very few who has grassroots experience in the crime. In recent times he is kept away from the phone and some even tell that he is mostly in bed due to his age-illness and operatives just run the syndicate with less power and work as most of his is now destroyed by the Encounter Squad and the new tough laws.

The versions are written and investigated by Hussain Zaidi an Indian Author and former Investigative Journalist in his Book: My name is Abu Salem.
